NYFW 2018 BTS with Michael Beel

Michael worked with many of the worlds best in hair and fashion.

Michael Beel flew to New York early February to work backstage at one of the most prestigious fashion events in the world... New York Fashion Week. This was his prize for winning Industry NZ Hairdresser of the Year in 2017. Over the 9 days, he was in the big apple, apart from shopping up a storm and sightseeing, he got to assist on six shows at NY fashion week, making the beautiful people even more beautiful backstage. The following is his backstage account. For more photos follow/stalk his Instagram Michael Beel Hair.

NYFW Show 1 - Noon by Noor

Hair Director: Paolo Soffiatti

Hair Sponsor: Mr. Smith Hair

With a hair team of approx 20, under the direction of Paolo we created beautiful soft waves with a deep side part and making the hair look rich and luxurious. Being the first show for me I was so excited to get to work under the direction of this hairdresser who does hair for the likes of Vogue and campaigns for Ralph Lauren and Dolce and Gabbana

Staying focused on the vision of the hair director was critical.

It was fabulous to see NYFW sharing the teams' creativity.

NYFW Show 2 - Alice McCall

Hair Director: Keiren Street

Hair Company: Wella

This Australian Designer showed a beautiful collection and under Keiran’s instruction, a team of all Australian and New Zealand hairdressers created some effortless cool-girl hair. Centre parting and casual waves but the hair looking healthy and expensive.

NYFW Show 3: Tanya Taylor

Hair Director: Linh Nguyen for Cutler

Hair Company: Redken

A fashion installation with hair that worked with the models' natural texture and creating an effortless feel to the hair pulling it back off the face to accentuate the clothes. Loved working with Linh as nothing is an issue and this man is also responsible for the hair on Project Runway amongst other amazing feats.

NYFW Show 4: Zimmerman

Hair Director Renya Xydis of Valonz

Hair Company: Wella

Once again the Australian and NZ Hair team worked with this Australian designer under the amazing hair direction of Renya, who would be Australasia's leading editorial stylist, to create a beautiful romantic texture in the hair that had a soft fishtail braid running down the back. This show was intense as before the show started a full photoshoot happened with every single Model placing immense time pressure especially for the girls running late from a previous show and only having ten minutes to get thru six girls. But the work was one of my favourites from the week.

NYFW Show 5: Area

Hair Director: Shingo for the Wall Group

Hair Company: Mr. Smith

This offsite show was held around a school swimming pool and had a slightly more edgy street vibe with lots of sparkles and sequins... I was in heaven. The Hair for this was essentially a top knot with a center parting and two little twists just along the parting and some serious hair accessories. Working in changing rooms got quite hot towards the end backstage.

A simple, yet stunning top knot was created with a strong center parting.

Area created an edgey street vibe with lots of sequins which I loved!

NYFW Show 6: Badgley Mischka

Hair Director: Peter Gray

The biggest and most elegant show I got to work on with the amazing Peter Gray. These designers do the gowns etc for the Oscars and had lots of media attention. We created beautiful soft romantic French roll pleats with flyaways to move as the girls were walking down the catwalk. What a way to finish my NY Fashion Week experience!

An elegant show that required hair that was just as elegant!

Working with Peter and the team on this stunning show was the perfect way to end my NYFW experience. Thanks to the Industry team for acknowledging my creativity with this NZ Hairdresser of 2017 prize.
