What will 2018 bring for Mathias and the team of Buoys at the 2018 L'Oréal Fashion Hair Awards?Share
Our Colour Dream team star Mathias took out the title of New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year at the prestigious L’Oréal Style and Colour Trophy Awards.
The Salon team at Buoy have just completed their entries the epic 2018 L'Oréal fashion hair awards - The Collective which is being held in The Cloud in Auckland over two days. The teams work will be judged by some of the most well-regarded experts in our industry, like Tabatha Coffey
Mathias' entry caught the eye of the judges Stephen Marr and Tracey Hughes who commented that “His look captured their attention as something they could see on a Magazine cover”. The judges were looking for something contemporary and effortless. Something they’d be inspired to try themselves.
Mathias was inspired by the colours of a dead bunch of flowers - strange but true. The colours captured him and he felt challenged to turn something that was no longer relevant or beautiful, into something gorgeous and timeless. “If I were to suggest I created a hairstyle with green and gold, you’d think I was mad, so I wanted to do just that, create something unexpected and beautiful, from something others would throw away,” says Mathias.
“I was not expecting to win” he elaborates. “I’m only twenty-five and it’s my first entry so I was really in it for the experience at this point.”
The trip to Portugal has not yet sunk in yet for Mathias. “Maybe once I’m in the air, it will feel more real.” - Mathias.
This win opens new doors for Mathias, performing on an international stage and meeting industry idols, and mingling with the wider L’Oréal community. Having worked with L’Oréal as his ‘brand of choice’ his whole career, it’s more than an exciting opportunity. He will recreate his winning look live on stage for the panel of Judges at a three-hour awards event in Portugal in October this year.
The Colour Trophy Awards, in its 21st year, requires competitors to show a photograph and describe their inspiration, colour and style technique and products used to create their hairstyle.
Finalists are judged on "creative, fashion-forward hair colour, an innovative and striking cut, and outstanding hairstyling". The looks must be commercial and stunning, and suitable for the model's look and style.
Mathias, born and raised in Wellington, is known for his free-hand colouring and attention to detail. After performing live at Australasia's biggest hairdressing conference - Hair Expo - earlier 2016, he is projecting huge successes for his hairdressing career.
“The important thing for me is not to become complacent, I need to strive to be more. I have the expectation of others that will drive me also. I’m excited about the future.”
