'Imprisonment’ is a collection which has stayed in my mind for couple of years. The idea started from my struggle of creation. When we talk about ‘think outside the box’, the BOX is the prison of our mind. I was locked in that box for a long time and couldn’t find a way to break it. Till one day I read something about ‘dream diary’, I was inspired.
This is how I use my creative brain nowadays: I will find my direction/theme of what I want to create first, and then start to do research. After my mind is overloaded with all that information, I go to bed and let the subconscious do the job.
From that point, I start to think about how I can create a collection to annotate that moment. ‘Imprisonment – Soul’ is what I created at the end.
The cling wraps and heavy jewelleries delineate the box that imprisons our body. The thick, chunky, twisted hair represents the chains and manacles of our mind.
The models’ postures, language and emotional expression is also key to explaining the sentiments of struggle, pain, perplexion and so on.
Victor Hugo said ‘There is one spectacle grander than the sea, that is the sky; there is one spectacle grander than the sky, that is the interior of the soul’.
So don’t let your body imprison your soul. This is the message I want to pass on from the collection.
